Christmas markets, or Christkindlmärkte, are world-renowned for their festive atmosphere, traditional crafts, and delicious treats, with major markets in Munich, Salzberg and Vienna offering unique experiences, typically running from mid-November until Christmas Eve, featuring mulled wine (Punsch), roasted chestnuts, and handcrafted gifts against historic backdrops. Munich hosts numerous Christmas markets with the largest and most famous being the traditional Christkingmarkt at Marienplatz offering crafts, food like gingerbread and sausages, and mulled wine. Set in the historic city center, the Salzburg markets (Domplatz, Mirabellplatz) offer stunning views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress, creating a fairytale ambiance. Vienna boasts numerous markets, with the Rathausplatz market being the largest and most famous, known for its giant tree and ice rink. Other notable Vienna markets include those at Schönbrunn Palace and the charming Spittelberg district.
